Video Games: Then and Now

If there’s one thing we can agree on, it’s the fact that the world is not what it was 40 years ago. It’s not even the same as 3 years ago. As every new year brings ample change with it, video games are no different. However, there are three notable differences we can see: themes, quality and convenience.

When it comes to the themes of video games, while violence and racing is still prevalent in the industry, they have taken a backseat to games that stimulate life. Games that require their players to make decisions that affect the main character or in shorter words-life simulations, are becoming increasingly popular. They intend to develop decision making abilities for children and let them realise that there are consequences to their decisions. This can help kids be less reckless and more calculated in their lives.

It’s no shock that technology has come the farthest since the 80’s, and keeps surprising us each year. With new technology, comes the ability to make video games more life-like. Animations and title credits and ‘Point-Of-View’ or POV animations have continually impressed and shocked users with each version that’s released. With these improvements, however, come a need for disclaimers. Users should know and realise that no matter how life-like the projections in the video game, they must not be reenacted or misinterpreted as ‘okay to perform in the real world’. Age ratings and warnings assure video game creators that the users have this in mind.

Lastly, gone are the days where a gaming setup and PCs were the only way one could race cars or build houses. Now, all it takes is a device as tiny as a smartphone! Video games are increasingly releasing mobile versions for tablets and phones so they can be played on the go without any setup required. Although it must be said that the graphics and levels are limited in mobile versions. These convenient ways of gaming make long road trips, or that boring family function so much more tolerable!

Video games have come a long way, but the classics like MarioKart and MineCraft still dominate the industry even after 40 years of business. Games like these allow children to share a bond with their parents and make for quality game nights. We, from Team Fun City, wish you and your family the most fun of the evenings (and a hearty good luck, we hope you win)!
