“The soul is healed by being with children”

-Fyodor Dostoevsky

Which is why our strength lies in keeping the spark in our children alive. After the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis proves to affect young minds in ways they would never comprehend. But if we take a moment to see the world through their eyes, we can save a generation that would otherwise be doomed. Since Children’s Day is around the corner, we thought we’d share a few pointers on how to help our children overcome the effects of the pandemic.

At Fun City, we believe children and adults are alike. They sense joy, exhilaration, and doubt. So how do we reach out to our little ones and reassure them? Let’s start with some simple questions that might be swimming around in your child’s head.

Here are some questions children are left with due to the pandemic and here’s how we answer them.

What happens to my dream?

The biggest question of all, children who are generally pushed towards achieving and working towards their goals are left with a lot of time and uncertainty, due to the pandemic. They might not voice their concern, but they might show ‘symptoms’ like acting out or displaying out-of-the-character lethargy. Or they are probably simply wondering what the future holds… Talk to them. Map out a fun and alternative way to keep them focused on their goals.

When will life go back to how it was?

Children more than adults will have to bear the brunt of the pandemic, if they aren’t part of the decision-making of the household. Uncertainty seeps in when children don’t understand what they are facing. Let’s make sure we include them for some of the big decisions!

Why don’t my friends talk as much?

Drifting away from friends during this rift is unbearable when seen through the eyes of a child. The friends they make are the ones they spend most time with and when friends “lose interest” in keeping touch, it can be disheartening. Encourage your children to stay in touch with their pals and be open to talk to them about their feelings. Possibly over tea & snacks!

What’s the point of celebrating?

Festivities, special days, and birthdays may not be as fun but never give up on tradition! Make them feel the anticipation just as they would any other day. Invite close ones over or keep the connection alive with virtual calls and exchange of gifts. If you sense that they are put off by remote celebrations, talk to them or see what you can do to brighten their mood.

Apart from many other disadvantages children may go through, based on their state of mind, these pointers were some basics to kickstart their healing process. Children’s Day is around the corner and it is important to remember that every child has a unique path paved. Let’s carve out one that fits your child and celebrate them everyday!
